TOP 10 CRITERIA EAP VENDORS REPORT DECISION-MAKERS SHOULD REVIEW WHEN SELECTING AN EAP

The process.

We've posted requests and sent out emails for EAP vendors to submit what they believe the 10 criteria for selecting an EAP vendor should be.  Emails were sent to EAPage.com listed vendors, the EAPage.com mailing list, random emails from vendors listed  in EAPA directory, and random emails to EAP vendors found in internet searches (keyword "eap").

The purpose.

Decision-makers need objective information and guidance when selecting an EAP.  The literature reflects that decision makers depend upon marketing material and sales presentations to base their decisions about EAP selection.  With a fierce competition for EAP contracts, the question of ethical marketing and sales practices has been raised. Some EAPs offer everything to anybody interested at any cost.  Sadly, there has been more disappointment with the EAP products.  This is in part due to creating false expectations.  EAPs have marketed less on what their expertise and services are and instead compromised their pricing structure as if it were the only criteria for selecting their EAP.  This works under the assumption that all EAPs are the same, its just the price that is different.  When decision-makers believe this, the cost of the services loom larger.  (read The Pricing of EAPs; and OPEN MINDS Advisor Feature Article)

EAPs are different. While some of the products are the same, the emphasis and internal resources that go into some products and services will be different depending on the EAP. These differences and the success that is achieved by them are what pricing should reflect.  The top 10 criteria is a first step at getting a look at what some EAPs value in the delivery of EAP services. Decision-makers will get an idea if the needs of their company fall in line with what the EAPs report as their successful criteria for delivery of EAP services.

The Vendors.

We received a total 34 responses.  Seven were anonymous.  These vendors represented a mixed group of providers.  Both large and small, local (statewide), national (U.S. based) and international (located outside of of U.S.). Participation was voluntary.

The results.

Upon review of the submitted criteria, there were 11 distinct categories.   The order of the criteria was scored.  That is, the number 1 criteria that was presented was assigned a rating of 10 and descended by one as the criteria increased. Therefore, the second listed criteria was assigned a 9, the third an 8, and so forth.  Points were totaled to give the score of each criteria.  The highest score received the top listing meaning that the majority of EAPs had that criteria listed towards the top of their list.

The descriptions were taken from the actual lists highlighting content and theme of all the lists. Lastly what each vendor cited as their number one criteria and where it placed in the master list is presented.

Vendors who have listed with EAPage.com have their individual top 10 list in its entirety and can be accessed by clicking on their corresponding number.  Web site addresses and contacts are also provided.

How to use this guide.

There are no right or wrong answers.  Vendors were asked to look at themselves and tell us what they believe are the most important considerations when selecting an EAP.  We believe that their answers reflect where their energy and resources go to produce the best EAP product in a competitive market.  While there is much overlap in criteria, knowing that a company values the importance of "availability", for example, may align with what your needs are at your company. Or asking why they may have ranked one criteria lower than another can lead to a valuable discussion.  If there is a vendor not represented on this list, ask them what there top ten criteria is or have them include it in the proposal, then compare it to this list.  See where their priorities are.

This list is not all inclusive nor does it suggest the weight each vendor gives to a particular criteria.  Some may feel that the top three are equally as important and provide a balanced diligence to each. Nonetheless it is a starting point. What is most important as a decision maker is to evaluate your needs and develop goals first, then find the EAP that will deliver them.
